Giants Eagles Game Preview

You thought last week’s game was big? This is bigger. A win, and the Giants are in good position to take the NFC East crown. A loss, and the Giants are on the outside looking in for the playoffs.  The Giants responded well last week. In this game, let’s hope they are up to the task.

QUESTIONABLE: S Michael Johnson (groin)

PROBABLE: QB Eli Manning (foot), RB Ahmad Bradshaw (ankle/foot), G Chris Snee, DE Justin Tuck (neck)

OUT: WR Jeremy Maclin (foot), RB Brian Westbrook (concussion)

QUESTIONABLE: WR Kevin Curtis (knee)

PROBABLE: LB Joe Mays (illness), LB Tracy White (shoulder), DE Victor Abiamiri (knee), WR Jason Avant (hamstring), TE Brent Celek (thumb), G Todd Herremans (shoulder), WR DeSean Jackson (concussion), LB Akeem Jordan (knee), DT Mike Patterson (wrist), T Jason Peters (shoulder/head)

The Giants can usually move the ball against most teams. But, because the weather is not going to be great, the passing game is going to struggle, which puts the onus on the running game to have a big day. Jacobs and Bradshaw will need to be huge.  The Giants can try to work the short passing game, and hope the ball isn’t too slippery. Honestly, it all comes down to the running game. We know Eli isn’t good in inclement weather. It doesn’t make sense to try and force the ball downfield. Short passes to Steve Smith will work just fine–as long as the run game gets going. The run game is key if the Giants want to win.

Good news for the Giants: Jeremy Maclin and  Brian Westbrook are out. Of course, Westbrook was out last game, and we all know how that worked. But, it’s still an advantage. Couple that with the weather, and the Iggles offense could struggle. That might be the biggest advantage of all. I’m not worried about the run defense. Putting Chris Canty in the starting lineup was one of the best moves Bill Sheridan has made all year. I am, even with the weather and Maclin out, worried about the pass defense. The Giants just can’t cover anyone. If Ross starts at safety, that should help. But, we’re seeing corners getting flat out beat. I’d recommend playing some bump and run, get really physical at the line of scrimmage. They can’t just give receivers a cushion. Also, Coach Sheridan, if someone is getting beat, GIVE HIM HELP! I don’t want to see Bruce Johnson getting beat one on one like he did against the Cowboys. Have to make adjustments. And, as always, a strong pass rush will help the corners. It seems that Osi coming off the bench as a strictly as pass rusher has helped.

The Eagles are banged up, that’s for sure. No Maclin, no Westbrook. Jackson is banged up. But, they’ve won 3 straight. The Eagles always give the Giants trouble. I don’t know how much of a homefield advantage this is, because the Iggles don’t fear the Meadowlands. This is a good Eagles team. You have to wonder what the impact of the injuries will be. Also, watch out for Trent Cole, a tremendous pass rusher.

Each game seems tougher to pick. This one is no different. Matchup-wise, it’s about even. I do think the Giants can run on the Eagles, which is a huge advantage with the weather. But, can the Eagles pass on the Giants? I think they can, which is why this game comes down to time of possession. If the Giants can run on the Eagles, then they should win the time of possession battle. That’s how I’m making this pick. FINAL SCORE: Giants 28, Eagles 24

Just a note: I have a hockey game tonight, so I won’t be able to watch or cover the game. Yeah, it sucks. (although, if I score three goals, I’ll feel a little bit better).  However, you will be in good hands with Andrew Ilnicki, who will be starting in my place.
