Giants Panthers Halftime Thoughts

Just an awful first half for the Giants, as the Panthers are up 24-0 . No excuses here. Unacceptable lack of effort in the biggest game of the year.

Outside of the first drive, the Giants haven’t really moved the ball. Well, they have, but mistakes have cost them. Madison Hedgecock’s holding penalty brought back a Steve Smith TD. Mario Manningham fumbled away a first down. Hakeem Nicks had a drop. Can’t have these mistakes. Can’t be this sloppy. Run game hasn’t really done much. But, I can’t say this enough: Stop the mistakes. Stop the sloppiness.

Defense is another story. They seem to be a step slower than than the Panthers. When they have a chance for a sack, they can’t close. Giants are getting pressure on Moore, but he’s pretty mobile, and has made some plays. Run defense could not put a hand on Jonathan Stewart on his touchdown run.  The Giants have to do a better job of closing on the blitz. Even though Steve Smith hasn’t done anything big, I don’t get why Kevin Dockery is covering him. Terrell Thomas is clearly the better corner. Dockery is quick, but he’s not good enough to be on Smith. There’s no effort on the defensive side. No sense of urgency. Panthers are just running right through. Awful. Unacceptable.

For the Giants to win, they have to stop the mistakes on offense.  Keep moving the ball, but stop the mistakes. On defense, they have to put Terrell Thomas on Steve Smith. They have to close in faster on the blitz. But, most of all, on both sides of the ball, just more energy. There’s no fire. Panthers want it more. Giants don’t really seem to care. In a game of this importance, there has to be more of an effort. There’s been none so far. It’s unacceptable. Giants fans have every right to be upset. The Giants need a miracle to win. Do they have it in them? With the effort they’ve shown, doesn’t look like it.
