Giants Jets Game Preview

Well, folks, it’s here. Football. After months of waiting, we finally have real football. Soak it in. Enjoy it. This is the first of many.

The Giants are taking on the Jets and are playing in the New Meadowlands for the very first time. While the Jets may think this is a game for bragging rights, in reality, it isn’t. It’s the first preseason game. The starters are going to play a series or two.

8:00 PM, ESPN. Radio: WCBS-FM 101.9. Local: My9

OUT: LB Keith Bulluck (knee), TE Kevin Boss (hamstring/ankle) WR Tim Brown, (hamstring/groin) TE Travis Beckum (hamstring) S Michael Johnson (back) , WR Steve Smith (groin), Chris Snee (knee), WR Sinorice Moss (hamstring), Kenny Phillips (Knee), Kevin Boothe, Jake Ballard (hamstring), G Rich Seubert (hand), Corey Webster

We will see Eli for one or two series, Jacobs and Bradshaw for the same, the offensive line for the same as well. It will be weird. I’m more interested in getting a look at Ramses Barden, Victor Cruz and Andre Brown. Throw Will Beatty into that mix as well. With so many guys injured, there will be a lot of backups playing, and this is their time to shine. Can Ramses Barden get open consistently? Can Victor Cruz capitalize on his stellar training camp? How will Andre Brown in his first game action? It’s hard to diagnose what we’re going to see when we haven’t seen anything. It’s best to look at individual players and see how they do.

As with the offense, we won’t be seeing much of the starters. But that’s okay. I’m actually more interested in seeing the new Perry Fewell defense. It’s looked great in practice. How does it do in game play? I can’t wait to see Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph. Joseph has had a great camp, and JPP has shown flashes of brilliance. I also want to see Jon Goff and Phil Dillard, as well as Clint Sintim. This game is to see how the new defense looks.

It’s all about Matt Dodge. The rookie punter has been inconsistent in camp, and he’ll need to improve quickly if he wants to be a productive player. Filling Jeff Feagles’ shoes is hard, no doubt, but Dodge has to step in and feel comfortable right away. We’ll see how his punts are tomorrow. What’s the hang time? What’s the distance? Can he angle his punts?

I also want to see some of the returners. Victor Cruz will get action. Andre Brown may get action. It’ll be interesting to see how these guys do.

Ah, the Jets. The stars of “Hard Knocks”. The brash, confident Jets. Obviously, this game won’t prove much. But we’ll get a good look at a team expected to  make a serious run for the Super Bowl. They certainly have the talent. We’ll only see the starters for a few series.

This is the debut for the New Meadowlands Stadium. How will it look? How will the field play? What about the wind? It’ll be weird seeing Giants football in a different stadium, but this is a warmup, I suppose.

There is no point of predicting preseason games, especially the first one. But I’m all about having fun and this is a fun exercise. I’m seriously letting my fingers type. Whatever they type, that’s my prediction. So, fingers, what do you think? Giants 21, Jets 17
