Rolle vs Landry

We continue our comparison of NFC East players. First  up was Eli vs Romo. Next was Nicks vs Jackson. Yesterday, it was Osi vs Ware. Today, it is Antrel Rolle against LaRon Landry.

*Note: Rolle played corner from 2005-2007. To be fair, I excluded those stats. Rolle’s career stats, at both corner and safety, can be found here

Rolle: 47 games, 254 tackles, 5.4 tackles per game, 2 sacks, 17 pass deflections, .37 pass deflections per game, 6 interceptions, .12 interceptions per game

Landry: 56 games, 335 total tackles, 5.98 tackles per game, 4 sacks, 31 pass deflections, .55 pass deflections per game, 4 interceptions, .07 interceptions per game.

For a safety, the most important stat is tackles. Safeties have to be the last line of defense. They have to be sure tacklers. They are also asked to do a lot in run coverage. Landry averages about more than half a tackle per game. That could be the difference between a touchdown or not. Landry also affects the game more in pass coverage. More deflections, which is an important stat for safeties.

The takeaway here is that Landry makes more plays on the ball. More tackles, more pass deflections. Yes, Rolle has more INTs, but it’s a small difference. The pass deflections are big. The tackles are big. Landry had 95 tackles as a rookie, more than Rolle has had in any season, corner or safety. Averages 83 tackles per season, and that includes one down year with 65. Rolle also averages 83 tackles per season, but game by game, he’s making about one less tackle. I know that seems nit-picky, but as the last line of defense, it’s a big deal.

It’s a close one, and one of the closest battles we’ve had so far. Both are talented. Rolle became a leader on the Giants defense in his first season. You can make the argument that he’s still learning the safety position, after being a corner his whole life. One interesting stat is that, on solo tackles, Rolle makes 5.2 per game (as a safety). Landry only makes 4.5 per game. Landry racks up assisted tackles, which is great, but if we’re talking about the safety as a last line of defense, the most important tackle is going to be solo.

It’s tough, and I think you can tell throughout the post that I’m waffling. It’s because I am. I’m not going to say they’re even, because that would be a cop out. In a toss-up, give me Antrel Rolle. I think the fact that he makes more solo tackles per game, plus the fact that he’s only played safety for three seasons, gives him more long term upside. Both are very good players, and if you ranked safeties throughout the league, Rolle and Landry would be very close, if not right next to each other. Both are top 10 safeties. So, with either one, you’re getting a great safety. I just think Rolle is a tad bit better. Not much. But enough for him to be the better player.

All Redskins believe Landry is a beast. Problem is, Landry gave up too many big plays in 08/09 — was switched from SS to FS and back… was largely innefective, and had to make his tackles to save TDs becuae the rest of the defense sucked. AND – he got trucked most notably by Brandon Jacobs which he will never live down.

Rolle wins just on general principle.

Yo son, laron landry and rolle? comparing those two? landry has about 50 times more explosiveness and hitting power then rolle, never seen a highlight real of rolle landry has about ten on youtube. MONSTER HITS. the kind of hits that scare wrs to not go over the middle and just want to shut it down, desean jackson got loose on coverage the first play of the game last year on mnf and got a td, he caught ZERO balls the rest of the game, before the game landry told him he was going to put him to sleep, and desean fell in line and got a td and didnt want annnyyynmoreee puusssyyy!! yeah landry got ran over once in his lifetime, look at all the jacobs hits hes put on jacobs pver the years, one game picked him and threw him on his head.

I haven’t seen many MONSTER HITS on youtube from Ed Reed either, so I guess LaRon Landry is better than him too?? Rolle can actually COVER his man, you rarely saw him getting beat last year (or his few years in Arizona). Unfortunately Redskins fans are used to watching criminals like the late Sean Taylor (laying hits on punters in Pro Bowls) and think THAT’S the way the game is played, yet ever since the team has become a bunch of head hunting cheap shot artists they haven’t made much of an impact. As much as I hate DeSean, how did that game pan out for LaRon’s TEAM?? And it’s funny how you admit that on the very first play he missed his man in coverage and gave up a TD. Also as Andrew said, the REAL youtube clip to watch is Brandon Jacobs laying it into LaRon, not the other way around. LaRon is a good hitter, but a borderline BAD safety. Rolle is head and shoulders better.

Laron Landry is a great great Strong safety not free. Mark my words 2011 will be his best year. With Atogwe playing free safet, Landry will be able to play his nautral fierce hard hitting play

  4. rudy 29_30 says:

Rolle is the better player. Landry is a cheap shot artist , can’t cover, and gets beat because he is reckless and over aggressive. For every big hit Landry makes, he makes two bonehead plays, penalties or getting beat deep, that hurt his team. Rolle is more consistent, better in coverage, and makes plays that help the team and make everyone around him better.

  5. Andrew says:

Landry gave up way too many plays guys — and he’s hard to compare to a FS like Rolle. AS a free safety in 2009 though, he was the 5th worst in the league according to PFF. Hes a much better SS for sure. Big, quick, tough — just not as GREAT as Redskins fans believe he is.

I give you guys a break. You guys didn’t get to see Landry last year. But do you guys read? Only great in Redskins fan eyes? He was a DMVP contender. Oh yeah, he was also playing with a broken wrist, sprained shoulder, and strained achilles. It’s not 2009 anymore, he was a BEAST last year. He averaged about 9.5 tackles a game last year. Had a game winning INT and had 1.5 sacks last year in 9 games.
