LT and Phil Simms Sack the Giants!

My Opinion; Lawrence Taylor let it be known last weekend that if the Giants were his team he’d make a change at head coach. “I think he’s done some great things…but I don’t know if I could have played for him,” LT said when asked about Tom Coughlin. ‘I think he may have lost this team.”

But I was really surprised that Phil Simms was so negative about the Giants management as well. Simms was being interviewed about the game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Giants. Simms was overly expressive when asked about his relationship with his former team.

“They cut me” Simms said, “I won the (Pro Bowl) MVP the year before and they cut me the year after!” I had always wondered how Simms had taken that part of his career, because it wasn’t his coach Bill Parcells that he was talking about but Dan Reeves who the Giants decided to bring in after they refused to give Parcells an extension on his contract!

I have watched the careers of both these players and the Giants head coaches and there is no comparison to a Bill Parcells coached team and a Tom Coughlin coached team. LT’s response about TC was what a lot of former players have said about him, that he is not a player’s coach but more of a disciplinarian and teacher. I have watched Tom Coughlin’s speeches on and they would drive a grown man to scream. These are men with families and responsibilities not a bunch of high school kids with the same kind of preaching for the last ten years.

Of course for these two great players there was only one head coach and that was “The Tuna:” Bill Parcells. I have watched sixty years of Giant Football and no coach and team could match those great Giant teams! It must be difficult for them to see so many great memories and records come crashing down with the awful play of this team over the past couple of years!

Book it Dano!

    Dude – do your homework.

It wasn’t Reeves who cut Simms it was George Young. Young had selected the future-Hall-of-Famer (in his own mind) Dave Brown with the Giants first round supplemental, and feared Simms has blocking his path to greatness.

Reeves had nothing but respect for Simms, having restored him as the starter, and trading Hostetler, after the debacle that was the Handley era.

Young’s massive ego and boundless arrogance refused to accept that Brown would never be a starter, let along a great one. That cost Reeves his job as well, bringing in QB guru Jim Fassel to finally prove Brown’s greatness to the world.

Fassel saw the obvious and opted for Kent Graham and Danny Kannell. Exit Young and Brown with him.
