Giants Jason Pierre-Paul Looks to Be On a Mission in 2016

Jason Pierre-Paul

A year ago, the Giants had no idea if Jason Pierre-Paul would ever play again after a July 4 fireworks accident mangled his right hand. Pierre-Paul was able to return for the final eight games of last season, but playing with a huge club on his injured hand prevented him from resembling the player who recorded 12.5 sacks in 2014.

A year to heal and another offseason surgery on his hand has Pierre-Paul confident that he’ll return to form. Pierre-Paul is now able to wear a glove on his right hand and GM Jerry Reese has seen the difference, Dan Duggan of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.

“I just know that back in the spring during (organized team activities), I looked at him a couple of times and saw how he was moving and how he was running and I was like, ‘Wow! I haven’t seen that guy for a little while now,’ “Reese said. “He just looked big and fast and explosive and I was just happy to see that. Obviously his hand situation is something that has healed with more time and he learned how to use it better and I expect him to be a load.”

Pierre-Paul’s injury lowered his value significantly and the Giants were able to sign him to a one-year, $10 million contract in the offseason. The 27-year-old will be looking to cash if he can bounce back this season. Reese sees things trending in that direction at this point.

“Jason looks like a beast out here,” Reese said. “His motor is running hot. You are talking about a guy that looks like he is on a mission.”

What a lift it would be for this Giants defense if JPP can come out and play with a lit fire this season. It’s a defense that needs to pressure the QB, and Pierre-Paul playing at a high level can do just that.

If the Giants defense is to perform better than it did last season, Jason having a strong season in 2016 will go a long way in accomplishing that.
