New Giants QB Daniel Jones Ignoring All the Naysayers

Daniel Jones was in Nashville at the NFL draft and not in New Jersey to hear and sense the angst and shock when his name was called out as the Giants’ selection with the No. 6 overall pick.

Plenty of athletes have not exactly been welcomed with open arms by their new fan-base. Jones sounds as if he realizes this and is not sweating it, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports.

“I haven’t paid too much mind to that,’’ Jones said recently on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “I think the key to playing quarterback, being consistent as a quarterback is keeping your head in the same place. That just comes down to your confidence in yourself. Your confidence has got to come from inside of you. If you’re looking externally for confidence you’re also going to be affected by the negative as well.

“Just find your confidence in yourself in knowing what you can do as a player, as a person, I think that’s the way that works and the best way to handling a lot of that stuff.’’

The Giants like a whole lot about Jones the player and athlete — and are particularly taken with Daniel Jones, the person and personality. They view him as having the perfect temperament to follow in the footsteps put down by Eli Manning as next in line as the starting quarterback and, one day, the face of the franchise.

“I’m looking forward being teammates with him,’’ Jones said of Manning. “Being able to learn from him every day. I think that’s a special opportunity. I’ve spoken to him once [since getting drafted] and he just congratulated me and said he’s excited to have me up there. I think I understand he’s got a job to do, I’ve got a job to do so we’re gonna do the best we can to help the Giants win as many football games as we can, whatever my role is.’’

“I think it will be good just to get in the building and meet a lot of the people and just kinda get started,’’ Jones said. “It will be our first opportunity to get out on the field with the coaches and start learning the offense, start building some chemistry as a group. Just looking forward to getting in there and starting to get comfortable with everyone.’’
